When Salesforce is down...

I am curious to hear about how other organizations handle a Salesforce outage. We have focused on compiling and maintaining as much data as possible within Salesforce so that it is universally accessible to all users. As an organization that needs to provide product support to our customers, this means that when Salesforce goes down, either due to performance issues such as have recently occured or for one of their lengthy 'maintenance' windows which can typically be 6-8 hours, that means that the data housed in Salesforce is not available to our staff.

At this points it seems that our only option is to host a 2nd application to act as a fail-over for when Salesforce is unavailable. What have you done to handle this issue?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Re: When Salesforce is down...

You could get your IT dept or a consultant to write an app using  the new Flash Action script application thingy that allows you to work offline.

If you don't need all the functionality of an application and just need access to the data, I wrote an application in MS Access fairly quickly that, given login/pw/token, will duplicate the schema of any sf org in Access and then suck all the data down.

You could also have your users download and install the Salesforce.com Offline Client software as a back-up, and then syncronize when service has been restored.

How well does the system handle inconsistencies?

Re: When Salesforce is down...

Could you give me an example of a potential inconsistency?
